An island from the bowels of the earth

Santorini (or Thira) is located in the southernmost point of the Cyclades and is essentially a complex of islands consisting of the islands of Thira, Thirasia (or Thirasia), Aspronisi, Palea and Nea Kameni.

Did you know that the complex of the islands of Santorini is still an active volcano together with Milos, Methana and Nisyros? And probably the only volcano in the world whose crater is in the sea? This island complex was created precisely because of this intense volcanic activity and we would say that it really emerged from the bowels of the earth! Twelve massive eruptions, one every 20,000 years or so, have contributed to the creation of a caldera, tearing down much of the volcano, which it insists on being rebuilt over and over again.

Santorini is considered the pre-eminently romantic destination in Greece. After all, one often does not encounter white majestic states built on the edge of the cliff, with picturesque villages, cobbled alleys and impressive churches bathed in light ρω Couples in love flock every year to the volcanic island of Santorini. In fact, in recent years the island has been established as a destination chosen by couples to carry out their wedding ceremony or honeymoon.

The capital of the island is Fira. Built in the Caldera, 260 m above sea level, with a wonderful view of the clear blue waters of the Aegean and the island of Nea Kameni, they seem to be a breath away from the sky… Fira together with Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia stretch along the Caldera enchanting the visitor, each in his own unique way. It should be noted here that the settlement of Oia is the first in Greece to be considered protected. Not coincidentally as it looks like a work of art carved into the rocks created by the volcanic lava… Other less famous but equally beautiful villages of the island worth visiting are Akrotiri and Mesa Vouno with their famous archeological sites, Pyrgos, K Emporio, Ammoudi, Finikia, Perissa, Perivolos, Megalochori, Kamari, Messaria and Monolithos. Some are more cosmopolitan, some quieter, others are surrounded by huge vineyards, others are dominated by tall castles with endless views of the Aegean but all have a special personality that will fascinate you.

Let us not forget to mention the wonderful beaches of the island that could not but harmonize with its special volcanic character. Dive into beaches with black, red and white sand or colorful pebbles and rocks carved by salt and wind. A unique setting that you will not find anywhere else in Greece…

So Santorini is waiting for you! It is certain that its intoxicating atmosphere where the blue of the Aegean mixes with the reddish of the rocks and the white of the houses will enchant you, making you look forward to returning to your “lost Atlantis”! Let the energy released by the volcanic landscape penetrate you and discover a special magic that really no image can immortalize.
